STRAY DOGS AND THEIR NEED OF ANIMAL WELFARE
ANIMAL WELFARE
Animal
welfare refers the treatment that an animal receives is covered by other terms
such as animal care, animal husbandry, and human treatment. Protecting an
animal's welfare means providing for its physical and mental needs. The World Organisation for Animal Health considers an
animal to be in a good state of welfare if it is healthy, comfortable,
well-nourished and able to express innate behaviour and not suffering from
pain, fear or distress (WOAH, 2008).
As we go about our daily activities, it is easy to forget what it means to make small differences that significantly impact the lives of animals with whom we share our planet. But our animals need us - now more than ever, and it is time we came forth and learned what it is to be kind, generous, humane, and compassionate. If you look beyond the concrete jungle, you'll find loyalty in unconditional love, humility in trust, and hope in difficulty - animals teach us the very essence of our existence.
WHY THE NEED OF ANIMAL WELFARE IMPORTANT FOR STRAY DOGS?
Most
of the population looks at stray dogs as a menace and a threat. Just a few unfortunate
events of dog bites are enough to turn people against stray dogs and perceive them
all viciously. in all probability, a dog does not bite unless provoked, sick or
in pain. in fact, according to a study conducted by The American College of
Veterinary Behaviourists published in Psychology Today, sometimes dogs might
not even prefer to interact physically. on the other hand, dogs are often
expressive and social animals, eager to ‘talk’ to us, provided we hear them out.
Stray dogs face abuse, hunger, sickness, and all kinds of
troubles. It is difficult for them to maintain good health, but Welfare of
Stray Dogs is here to help them. The organization runs regular check-ups on the
dogs and ensures that they have everything they need for survival, proper
health, and happier life. Improved dog population health ensures that the dogs
have a good life ahead and face no issues with their health.
Two recent cases in the Kerala and Delhi high courts
highlight the complicated nature of our relationship with domestic dogs. In
Kerala, the brutal and senseless killing of a pet dog, Bruno, highlighted the
needless and sometimes wanton cruelty that we can inflict upon animals. In
Delhi, on the other hand, the high court passed a judgement granting stray dogs
the right to food, and the right to be fed.
So,
to reduce ill treatment towards dogs and to protect them animal welfare is important.
